In spite of confessing to members of the media to the murders of five adults as well as an unborn child, murder suspect Derrick Dearman entered a plea of not guilty during his first court appearance Wednesday, August 31. The 27-year-old Dearman is accused of 'gruesomely' murdering five adults, one of whom was pregnant, in a Citronelle home on Saturday, August 20. According to officials, an axe as well as one firearm was used during the attack which happened while the victims were asleep. The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Robert Lee Brown, husband and wife Chelsea Marie Reed, 22, and Justin Kaleb Reed, 23, as well as their unborn son; and Joseph Adam Turner, 26 and his wife 35-year-old Shannon Melissa Randall.

The Citronelle home where five people, including a pregnant woman, were murdered on Saturday, August 20 burned down on Sunday, September 4. According to the Citronelle Fire Department, they discovered the home on fire at approximately 8:12 a.m. Sunday after receiving a phone call that a house was on fire. Fire officials as well as members of the Citronelle Police Department said they could see smoke from the Jim Platt Road entrance and that they had to cut the chain on the gate to get onto the property.
